Positive East is London’s largest HIV charity and is based in the heart of the East End. Every year we give advice and support to more than 35,000 people who come to us knowing they’ll receive a warm and friendly welcome. We have successfully provided a range of practical and emotional support services for people living with and affected by HIV in London for 25 years. We don’t want anyone else to be infected by the virus so run the most extensive prevention and testing programme in the capital.
Part of our history is reflected in a heritage lottery funded project, ’30 years of living with HIV’ which looks at the impact of the HIV prevention campaign of the 1980’s from the perspective of those involved; including those who were not expected to survive.
HIV support services, often provided by voluntary sector organisations, provide much needed care for people with HIV around, for example, coping with a new HIV diagnosis, stigma and disclosure, safer sex, adherence to HIV treatment, mental health, social isolation, and wider social needs. They thus prevent serious ill-health, onward HIV transmission and acute social care need, so saving public money in the long term.
Public Heath England’s Positive Voices survey found that over a third of people with HIV accessed HIV support services over a 12 month period. With over 100,000 people living with HIV in the UK, HIV support services are needed now more than ever.
Yet 2015 saw the start of a worrying trend of local authorities across the country totally defunding HIV support services.
We have written to the Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt, to make sure he knows that HIV support services across the country are being decommissioned and to tell him about the impact of these cuts on people living with HIV. We have also asked him to take action to make sure the provision of HIV support services is more secure in future.
The Positive East Annual Report 2014 highlights our achievements over the last 12 months in what was a challenging period.
