The Gay Men's team are currently running a campaign, funded by Tower Hamlets PCT and Newham PCT with the aim to encourage MSM (men who have sex with men) to have an HIV test.

Data from the 2006 Sigma Gay Men's sex survey, highlighted that in Tower Hamlets:

  • 17.5% of men had never tested for HIV;

  • 44% of men had 13+ sexual partners during the previous 12 months, with 24.7% having 30+ male sexual partners;

  • 54.7% had unprotected anal intercourse.

The Gay Men's team developed an innovative way of raising men's awareness of local east London HIV test clinics, by tapping in to the ubiquitous mobile texting service. Using an 80010 text number with a local 'keyword, men are able to find their local clinic, with additional supporting information available through a dedicated website - www.itsbettertoknow.org.uk.

In partnership with local gay Tower Hamlets venues, Positive East's Gay Men's outreach teams will be going to local venues, plus advertising through Gaydar.com and across local newspapers in Tower Hamlets and Newham.

The campaign has been picked up by BBC Online and BBC RADIO Asian network, as well as local community sites (Mysalaam.com) plus MoC and gay blogs.

Positive East - Employability

Positive East - Launch of new Employment services workbook
East London’s largest and leading HIV charity Positive East hosted an event on Friday 16th May to celebrate the success of their employment project and to launch their latest venture, the employment services workbook Find Your Way To Work. The workbook aims to give practical information, exercises and guidance to support HIV positive people into work, education and volunteering.

Barclays have funded the Positive East employment service since 2006, investing over £50,000 to support a project that improves the chances of people living with HIV back into Education and Work.

A further £5,000 has been invested to support the Find Your Way To Work book.

Positive East’s employment services project and associated workbook helps people living with HIV to identify their goals, make career development plans and support them to realise these aspirations. This is achieved through a variety of one to one support, training courses and volunteering and further education opportunities. This includes Barclays staff volunteering their time to offer interview skills training to Positive East’s clients.
