GMI Volunteering

At the GMI Partnership we rely upon volunteers to help us provide services to the MSM community in London. More than just making up numbers, our volunteers are a source of ideas, inspiration and energy that we rely on to make the work we do responsive to the changing needs of the men that we work with.
There is no such thing as a typical volunteer with the GMI Partnership. We have men and women, young and old of all ethnicities working with us and for most roles we don’t care if you are gay, straight, bisexual or whatever you feel yourself to be. We care about you as a person and the skills that you can bring to help men make informed choices about their sex life.

Volunteer Roles

All of our Volunteer roles have job descriptions attached to them. We are currently looking to recruit:

  • Health Trainers - click here to download role description (pdf);
  • Mentors - click here to download role description (pdf);

As a Volunteer with the GMI Partnership you will be asked to affiliate to one of our partner organisations. Mentors and Counsellors are normally affiliated to The Metro Centre with Health Trainers being free to choose between Positive East, West London Gay Men’s Project or The Metro Centre.

Steps to becoming a volunteer

Once our Training and Volunteer Coordinator has received your application forms you will be invited to attend one of our training sessions.
These take place at regular intervals throughout the year and have a variety of durations, allowing you to pick the course that is right for you. On this course you will learn the issues that MSM face around choosing the kind of sex to have, more about the community that you are looking to work with and understand the basics of sexual health. The course itself is accredited to the Royal Society of Public Health and a successful completion of the course, including an assessment, means you will be awarded a Level 2 Understanding Health certificate.

You will also receive training specific to your role as a Mentor, Health Trainer or Counsellor before starting work with us as well as regular reviews of your training needs along with forums to update you on changes to the sector that we work within to make sure your skills are developed and nurtured.
