Our Volunteers form an integral part of Positive
East providing valuable support for a wide range of services across
the organisation.
All
our volunteers undergo a comprehensive training programme. Please
see listed below the different teams and range of services we provide

- African services team: We
provide advice and guidance to help meet the cultural and language
needs of our African clients. African specialist workers carry out
one to one sessions providing information, advice referrals and
advocacy to support you to access, and get the best from, the services
that you need to help you. The workers also offer emotional support
where needed.
Volunteering opportunities include:
- peer
Group Facilitators (must be HIV positive)group
assistants to help group facilitators with preparing and delivering
successful group meetingsdrivers
to help with transportation of food to our groupscrèche
assistantshealth
Promotion - to help organize activities that help African people
lead a healthy lifestyle
- administrative
and other support for staff in other areas as appropriate.
Advice
Services: The Advice Services at Positive East provide housing, welfare rights
and general advice and support to clients, including applications
for income support, Community Care Grants and Charity Applications.
Their role also includes helping clients with drafting basic correspondence
and telephone advocacy. The team also deal with Community Care related
issues, and are involved in advocating on clients behalf to social
services.
We are currently looking for volunteers to join our team to assist
in the following areas:
- assess
and register new clients to the organisationhelp
clients to apply for charitable fundingcheck
through Income Support/JSA and Incapacity benefit formsassist
clients who are not fluent in English and help with completion
of forms
- administrative
and other support for staff in other areas as appropriate.
Gay
Men's Services: We provide support around a range of issues, including sexual health,
HIV information, sexual identity, discrimination and homophobia,
cultural and religious issues and lifestyle. We also provide a range
of social and support groups for a variety of different communities.
Volunteering opportunities include:
Group
Facilitators: providing
information and support via 'Signpost East London' helpline1
to 1 Stop smoking servicesoutreach
and venue health promotion.
Administrative
and other support for staff in other areas as appropriate.
Community
Services:
Independent
Living Team. This team provides a befriending service for those
service users who may have very little social contact with others
and need emotional and some practical support.DIY
Team.
You would be part of a team working together to carry out
small decorating jobs, gardening or small repair jobs for those
service users unable to carry out the work themselves.
Children
and Families team. As a volunteer you would provide support and
some practical help for those families where the parents may need
help in attending hospital appointments and some help with the
children.
Events
and Fundraising You
would be part of a team attending various events throughout the
year raising the profile of the Positive East services. Additionally
volunteers play an essential part in fund raising events throughout
the year and can be great fun.
Administration Volunteers
are required in the Administration team. These duties include
reception work, providing administration support for Positive
East teams and helping out with other general administration duties.
IT
skills For
those volunteers with some advanced IT skills you would be part
of a specialised team providing support for the IT network of
the organisation.
Gym
and Complimentary therapies We
are keen to recruit qualified gym instructors to train service
users in the Stepney gym and qualified complimentary therapists
to provide a variety of services for which we have therapy rooms
at Stepney centre.
