Mpox

PEP

PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is a course of medication taken by HIV negative people after sex to reduce the risk of getting HIV, it can stop an HIV infection after the virus has entered the body.

PrEP

PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis) is medication taken by HIV-negative people before and after sex to reduce the risk of getting HIV. PrEP only protects you from HIV and does not protect you from any other STIs, or pregnancy.

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal infection caused by an imbalance of bacteria. It can lead to unusual discharge and odor but is treatable.

Emergency contraception

Emergency contraception is a safe, effective way to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. It’s most effective when taken as soon as possible, within 72 hours.

Non-hormonal contraception

Non-hormonal contraception methods, like condoms, diaphragms, and copper IUDs, prevent pregnancy without altering hormones. They’re ideal for those seeking effective, hormone-free options.

Hormonal contraception

Hormonal contraception, like the pill or patch, regulates hormones to prevent pregnancy. It’s effective, with additional benefits such as reduced menstrual cramps and acne.

Chemsex

The term chemsex can be defined as sexual activity whilst under the influence of drugs, often taking place with one or multiple sexual partners.

Genital Warts and HPV

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common STI, often asymptomatic. It can cause genital warts and lead to cancers, but vaccination offers strong protection.

Mycoplasma genitalium (MG)

Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) is a bacterial infection of the urinary or genital tracts.

Herpes

Herpes is caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). There are two types; HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both can cause genital herpes, coldsores on the mouth, or whitlows on hands/fingers.

Shigella

Shigella is a bacterial infection causing severe diarrhea, often spread through contaminated food or water. Good hygiene and sanitation are key to prevention.

Heptatis

Hepatitis refers to liver inflammation, often caused by viruses like hepatitis A, B, or C. It can lead to chronic liver disease if untreated.

Syphilis (primary)

Syphilis is a bacterial STI with distinct stages, from sores to severe health problems if untreated. Early diagnosis and antibiotic treatment can cure it.

Gonorrhoea

Gonorrhoea is a bacterial STI that can infect the genitals, rectum, and throat. Early detection and antibiotic treatment are crucial to prevent serious complications.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a common bacterial STI, often without symptoms. It’s easily treated with antibiotics, but untreated infections can lead to serious reproductive health issues.
