How it works →NHS Clinics
PrEP is free on the NHS at any sexual health (GUM) clinic. We can contact clinics on your behalf.
Find a clinic offering PrEPPrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is medication taken by HIV-negative people before and after sex to prevent HIV. If someone taking PrEP is exposed to HIV, the PrEP stops the virus entering their cells and replicating. It needs to be at high enough levels in the body to work so it's important to take it correctly.
PrEP protects you from HIV only. It does not protect you from other STIs or pregnancy.
1
An HIV test to ensure you are HIV negative.
2
A Hepatitis B test as PrEP drugs are also active against Hepatitis B, so people with Hep B need advice on the safest way to take PrEP.
3
A kidney function blood test. This is a quick check for any pre-existing kidney issues that mean PrEP shouldn't be used or should be stopped.
These tests may be repeated after 6 weeks on PrEP. We do all three at your Positive East appointment.
There are different ways to take PrEP depending on the sex you are having and how regularly you are having it.
Take one pill at the same time each day for at least 7 days before you plan to have sex and continue to take this every day.
If you decide to stop taking PrEP as a daily pill, you’ll need to take one pill daily for seven days from the last time you had sex.
For vaginal and frontal sex: Take 2 tablets between 2 hours and 24 hours before sex. Then 1 tablet daily for the next 7 days.
For anal sex: Take 2 tablets between 2 and 24 hours before sex. Then 1 tablet daily for 2 days.
Always follow the instructions from your health care professionals and keep up the HIV and kidney function tests as advised.
