Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) is a bacterial infection of the urinary or genital tracts.
Transmission: Unprotected vaginal or anal sex
Symptoms: Many people will not have any symptoms and the infection will clear itself naturally. Others may have one or more symptoms such as:
Symptoms in people with a penis:
- Pain when urinating
- Discharge
- Pain in testicles
- Inflammation in the rectum causing anal pain/discharge
Symptoms in people with a vagina:
- Discharge
- Pain in lower abdomen
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding – such as in between periods or after sex
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
Testing: Sexual health clinics do not test for mycoplasma genitalium routinely, and you are likely only going to be tested if you have symptoms.
It is tested by a swab from the tip of the penis and a urine test, or a swab from inside the vagina
Treatment: A course of antibiotics
