Open City Documentary Film Festival screenings

April 27 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

We are delighted to collaborate with the Open City Documentary Film Festival and co-present these two film screenings:
Artistes en Zone Troublés, and
6.30pm on Saturday, 27 April at the Genesis Cinema
Two amazing and moving films comprised of home video footage exploring themes of queer identity, loss, love, injustices and HIV/AIDS.
Artistes en Zone Troublés
Stéphane Gérard, Lionel Soukaz / 2023 / France / 39’ / Digital / French and Spanish spoken, English subtitles
In Artistes en Zone Troublés, 2000 hours of personal video footage shot by Lionel Soukaz in the early 1990s are edited by Stéphane Gérard to form a 38-minute eulogy for, and celebration of, Soukaz’s partner, the artist Hervé Couergou. Soukaz’s and Gérard’s collaborative film comes to form a beautifully-rendered portrait of the then 29 year-old Couergou, whose life is abruptly cut short by illness, and is a meditation on creativity and death during the injustices of the AIDS crisis.
Daniel Jacoby / 2024 / Netherlands, Peru / 15’ / Digital / Spanish spoken, English subtitles
In 315, Peruvian artist Daniel Jacoby narrates a series of personal stories and historical events that have occurred, over the years, on his birthday, the 31st of May. Over the course of the film, comprised of home video footage, the oppressive logic connecting these anecdotes and events is slowly revealed. So too are the occlusive tactics employed by the Peruvian state, that had, since 1989, kept hidden a tragic episode in the country’s queer history until recent years.
