Bee Live: Black Women’s Maternal Health

May 22, 2021 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

This month in Bee Live, we will be looking at why black women are more likely to die in pregnancy and labour. We will also discuss black women’s experiences of maternity services, what are the factors that increase their risk of death and the ways in which we can empower pregnant black women.

We will be joined by a small panel of special guests, including:

  • Mars Lord – Coach and Birth Activist, triple award-winning doula, mentor, educator, coach, and on the RCOG Race Equality Taskforce and on the Birthrights Legal inquiry into Black Maternal Health panel with over 15 years experience. Mars created Abuela Doulas, a doula preparation course primarily, but not exclusively, for Black and Brown women, and is the Founder of BLA (Black Lives Abuela) Scholarship.
  • Rebecca Mbewe – works at Positively UK as the GROWS Training & Policy Coordinator and is a mentor, speaker and trainer working within the HIV sector.
  • Kemi Akinwunmi – Qualified Midwife, Specialist in Public Health, First Aid Trainer and Mother.  Founder of Professional Aunty which was designed to make the journey of parenting (with its ups and downs) as smooth as possible by having someone who can do some of the hard work for you.
